About this position

[Fully funded studentship covering fees, maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). Limited international studentships available with home/international fee difference waived by the university; does not cover visa or health surcharge costs.]

PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia in the evolution of plant environmental perception and calcium signalling.

This project investigates how plants detect and respond to changes in their environment through calcium signalling pathways, using the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha as a model system. The research addresses a major biological question: how signalling networks evolved in plants and how they support adaptation to stresses in the context of global climate change.

The student will study growth and physiology under different environmental conditions, measure calcium signals using bioimaging, and examine gene expression with qRT-PCR. The project also includes functional genomics work, building on identified stress-signalling genes and testing CRISPR knockout lines to understand their role in stress tolerance.

Training is interdisciplinary and includes plant biology, plant physiology, stress biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, transcriptomics-based analysis, and manuscript preparation. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to present at national and international meetings.

The studentship is suitable for a highly motivated applicant with interests in plant biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and environmental science. A background in biological or environmental sciences is expected, and a minimum 2:1 Bachelor’s degree is required. Funding is offered through ARIES under UKRI terms and conditions.

The award covers fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of places are available for international applicants, with the home/international fee difference waived, but additional relocation and UK living costs such as visa fees and the health surcharge are not covered.

Application is via the University of East Anglia postgraduate research portal. Deadline: 16 December 2026.
