About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Essex focused on virome dynamics and viral discovery in rehabilitated bats using longitudinal metagenomics.
This fully funded ARIES studentship examines how viral communities change in individual bats during wildlife rehabilitation, from admission through to release. The project builds on previous shotgun metagenomic work that uncovered extensive viral diversity in wild and rehabilitated insectivorous bats, including many potentially novel viruses. The new study shifts from cross-sectional data to a longitudinal design, aiming to track virome change over time and link viral patterns to host species, diet, rehabilitation duration, physiological condition, and the gut microbiome.
The student will work with the West Yorkshire Bat Group to collect non-invasive faecal samples and will use shotgun metagenomic sequencing to characterise viral diversity, reconstruct viral genomes, and investigate ecological and temporal trends. The project combines wildlife ecology, molecular methods, viral genomics, bioinformatics, and quantitative analysis, with a strong emphasis on reproducible computational research, data management, and scientific communication.
Training is interdisciplinary and includes specialist computational and sequencing support through the Quadram Institute, plus practical experience in wildlife rehabilitation, sampling, and conservation practice through the West Yorkshire Bat Group. The project is suitable for applicants from biological, ecological, or computational backgrounds, and is especially relevant for students interested in viruses, genomics, ecology, and conservation.
Funding is provided through ARIES and covers Home fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026-27, and a £2,500 research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available to international applicants, with the Home/International fee difference waived by the registering university. However, ARIES funding does not cover relocation or general living costs in the UK.
The deadline is 16 December 2026, and the position is offered full-time or part-time. Applicants should hold an appropriate first degree in Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, or Zoology.
