About this position
The University of Marburg is advertising ten doctoral researcher / PhD positions in the DFG Research Training Group (RTG) 3159, “Gender and Gendering in Contexts of International Criminal Law”, hosted by the International Centre for War Crimes Trials (ICWC).
This is an interdisciplinary doctoral opportunity for candidates interested in law, political science, sociology, history, gender studies, and related fields. The RTG examines how gender and gendering shape international criminal law, including its legal, institutional, and societal conditions of application, function, and impact. Doctoral researchers will work on a dissertation topic within the RTG’s research program and participate actively in the group’s core activities.
Funding and employment: The positions are paid, part-time appointments at E 13 TV-H, 75%, for 4 years (until 31 January 2031, subject to prior qualification periods). The start date is 1 February 2027.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should have an above-average completed university degree (Master, state exam, or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Prior knowledge of international (criminal) law, transitional justice, and/or gender studies is advantageous. English at C1 level is required; German skills or willingness to learn German are an asset.

What's required
Applicants need an above-average completed university degree (Master, state exam, or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to the RTG, especially peace and conflict studies, gender studies, history, modern German literature, political science, law, sociology, theology, or economics. Prior knowledge of international (criminal) law, transitional justice, and/or gender studies is advantageous. English proficiency at least at C1 level is required; German language skills or willingness to learn German are an asset. Team spirit, strong commitment to academic excellence, interdisciplinary cooperation, and disposition to own scientific qualification are expected.
