About this position
KU Leuven’s DistriNet research group is offering a PhD opening on physical-layer security for wireless mesh networks. The project sits at the intersection of secure communication, networking, and robotics, with a strong focus on protecting safety-critical wireless systems.
The research is motivated by networked control of robotic systems, including swarm robotics, where large numbers of robots require communication with high reliability, low latency, and deterministic quality of service. In this setting, the project aims to design novel physical-layer authentication solutions that can detect malicious communication while preserving strict latency bounds.
As a PhD researcher, you will work on developing authentication mechanisms based on secure localization and device fingerprinting, and you will explore how AI can support quasi-real-time anomaly detection in wireless mesh networks. The work combines physical-layer security, network security, wireless communications, and applied machine learning, with an emphasis on solutions that are both scientifically strong and practically useful.
The position is hosted within DistriNet at KU Leuven, a world-leading research group focused on distributed software systems and secure software engineering. The group’s applied research at Group-T emphasizes intelligent and distributed e-application security as well as security of IoT and cyber-physical systems. KU Leuven highlights a dual research culture that bridges fundamental research and industry-relevant innovation.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with at least cum laude honours. Strong analytical ability, technical expertise, excellent English, and a solid background in telecommunications, networking, and network security are required. Experience in physical-layer security and familiarity with machine learning or AI are considered additional strengths.
The offer includes the opportunity to work toward a PhD degree from KU Leuven, a supportive and collaborative research environment, professional development in strategic research and innovative solution design, and an attractive salary package with benefits such as health insurance and access to university infrastructure and sports facilities.
The application deadline is 2026-08-15. Candidates must apply through the KU Leuven portal; only portal applications will be considered. For further information, contact Prof. dr. ir. Dave Singelée at [email protected].
