About this position

Postdoctoral opportunity at the University of Szczecin in the Institute of Marine and Environmental Sciences, working on the ERC Starting Grant project EuroSoHo (European Socio-Hydrological Model).

The project tackles one of the most important challenges in climate adaptation: how flood risk in European riverine and coastal floodplains changes through the interaction of hydrological extremes, exposure growth, human behaviour, and flood protection. The work focuses on understanding the “levee effect,” the “adaptation effect,” and other feedbacks between flood occurrence and societal response that are not captured by standard flood-risk projections. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a probabilistic, system-dynamics European Socio-Hydrological Model (EuroSoHo) calibrated on historical data from 1950–2025 and used to project flood-risk dynamics across 1400+ regions in 42 European countries until 2100.

The research combines geospatial analysis, statistics, programming, and large-scale environmental data processing. It sits at the intersection of geography, environmental science, and water science, with strong relevance to flood hazard, floodplain exposure, adaptation planning, and climate-change impact assessment. The project will estimate socio-hydrological parameters such as awareness, preparedness, reactiveness, and risk aversion, and evaluate adaptation strategies including dike improvement, individual preparedness, exposure-growth restrictions, and relocation.

This is a full-time, 36-month postdoc appointment with a gross salary of 11,000–12,000 PLN per month, full academic employee benefits, 36 annual leave days, and support for short scientific missions and conference participation. The project is funded through Horizon Europe / ERC Starting Grant 101218797.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in hydrological extremes, flood hazard, or flood risk is required before the start date; applicants should have strong geospatial and statistical skills, excellent English, good programming ability (Python, R, or MATLAB), experience with large datasets, first-author publications in JCR journals, and the ability to work in teams and travel for project activities.
