About this position
Université de Strasbourg is offering a 1-year postdoctoral position in experimental volcanology within the ITES research environment in Strasbourg, France.
The postdoc is embedded in the European Research Council SYNERGY project ROTTnROCK, which investigates how hydrothermal alteration affects volcano morphology, instability, and unpredictable volcanic hazards. The broader project brings together an international team of principal investigators based in Strasbourg, Dublin, Potsdam, and Uppsala, combining expertise in remote sensing, mineralogy and chemistry, rock mechanics, and modelling.
The successful candidate will contribute to Work Package 2, focusing on how hydrothermal alteration influences the physical and mechanical properties of volcanic rocks. Research activities include laboratory experiments such as uniaxial and triaxial deformation tests, porosity and permeability measurements, and alteration experiments, alongside field-based measurements. The postdoc may also carry out additional analyses and modelling, interpret petrophysical and geochemical data, and help organise and participate in fieldwork in sites inside and outside the EU. Conference participation, abstract writing, and manuscript preparation in English are also expected.
This position is suitable for a researcher with a PhD in geosciences and a strong interest in volcanology, rock mechanics, and hydrothermal alteration. Experience with laboratory experimentation and/or field geophysical measurements is valued, as is the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international consortium. The post holder is expected to participate in project meetings, collaborative fieldwork, and administrative reporting such as monthly timesheets under EU-funded project rules.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in a field related to geosciences, with the PhD obtained within the last three years. A background in volcanology is preferred. Strong understanding of volcanology, experience with laboratory experiments and/or field-based geophysical measurements, and experience studying hydrothermal alteration are preferred. Candidates should be comfortable working in an international team, in a laboratory, and in planning and conducting fieldwork. Independent research experience, a strong publication history, experience supervising research, and excellent communication and organisation skills are also preferred. English is required for writing abstracts and manuscripts.
