About this position
Postdoctoral opportunity in genomics, bioinformatics, and centromere biology at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland.
This NCN SONATA postdoctoral project focuses on visualising and investigating eukaryotic genomic organisation, with a special emphasis on centromere structure and prediction. The work builds on an unusually rich existing resource generated by the group, including the tandem-repeat annotation software TRASH, the prototype Centromere Annotation Pipeline (CAP), and a curated survey of centromere architecture across more than 300 eukaryotic genomes.
The successful candidate will contribute to three main goals: developing a machine learning-assisted method for predicting centromere location and architecture directly from sequence data; transforming this into a modular and accessible annotation and visualisation tool that integrates gene, transposon, and tandem-repeat annotation with CAP; and applying the tool at scale to expand a genomic architecture atlas as a public community resource.
The project is highly relevant to research in genome assembly, repeat annotation, centromere biology, comparative genomics, and computational genomics. It is particularly suited to candidates with strong bioinformatics or computational biology backgrounds who are interested in tool development and large-scale genomic analysis.
Eligibility requires a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related discipline. Candidates with a PhD in computer science, mathematics, or physics may also apply if they have relevant biology-related research experience. Applicants should also have evidence of independent research ability, familiarity with statistical methods in biological data science, programming skills in Python or R, and comfort with Linux/HPC environments. The doctoral degree must have been obtained in the year of employment or within the previous 12 years, unless an eligible career break applies.
The position is full-time and temporary, with an expected start date of 1 December 2026. Applications are reviewed in two stages: first by the recruitment committee, then by interview for shortlisted candidates. The application deadline is 28 October 2026.
To apply, submit your application through the online recruitment form linked in the advertisement. Additional information about the institution and career opportunities is available on the institute website and career page.

What's required
A PhD or equivalent in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related field is required. Candidates with a PhD in computer science, mathematics, or physics may also apply if they have relevant experience in a biology-related field. Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degree in the year of employment on the project or within the 12 years preceding 1 January of that year, with possible extension for documented career breaks. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to design and drive a research project independently, understand statistical methods used in biological data science, be proficient in a scripting or programming language such as Python or R, be comfortable working in a Linux/HPC environment, and be able to survey the literature, analyse data critically, and draw conclusions.
How to apply
