About this position
Recruitment is open for a postdoctoral position in stable isotope biogeochemistry at the Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. The project, Post-doc - Isobase, is funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), OPUS-29 programme and focuses on the variability of carbon and nitrogen stable-isotope baselines in Quaternary terrestrial ecosystems.
The research examines whether more than one isotopic baseline can occur within a single ecosystem, especially in communities of plants and mammalian herbivores. The work combines modern and fossil material from Poland, including the Białowieża Forest, cave assemblages from the Polish Jura, and Pleistocene contexts such as Perspektywiczna Cave. The long-term goal is to improve interpretations of isotope flux and trophic relationships in fossil assemblages, especially through the study of bone collagen and other organic fractions preserved in modern and ancient tissues.
The successful candidate will work on analyses of stable isotopes in plants and herbivores, including protein fractions, cellulose, lignin, collagen, and amino acids. The role includes sample preparation, extraction of analytical fractions, amino-acid derivatisation, EA-IRMS, GC-FID/MS, and GC-C-IRMS measurements, as well as method refinement and data interpretation. The project also includes novel approaches such as individual amino-acid isotope analysis, seasonal isotope variation in plants, and tests of isotopic variation across taxa and habitats.
This is a full-time employment opportunity for 48 months with a gross-gross salary of PLN 11,600 per month. The place of work is the IGS PAS Research Centre in Warsaw, with occasional travel for training and conferences. The project is led by Dr hab. Maciej T. Krajcarz and is embedded in the Quaternary GeoEcology Research Group at IGS PAS.
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in Earth science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, or a related discipline, and should have experience in biochemical/geochemical laboratory analysis, stable isotope work, and scientific writing in English. Strong organisational ability, independence, and good English skills are required. Applications must be submitted by 31 August 2026 at 15:00 (Europe/Brussels time).

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
