About this position
Ghent University is offering a post-doctoral assistant position in the Department LW03 - History within the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, focused on classical history and ancient history. This is a temporary academic appointment with a strong research component: at least 70% of the role is dedicated to academic research, alongside teaching and student supervision duties at Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in classical history, supervise Bachelor and/or Master’s dissertations and exercises, and support doctoral students in the same field. The position is particularly suited to a researcher with expertise in ancient/classical history, experience with both textual and material primary historical sources, and a demonstrated record of scholarly publication.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in History in the field of classical history by the start of the appointment. The vacancy also asks for proven research activity in Ancient History, clear potential as a promising researcher, experience teaching and supervising seminars/dissertations in Dutch, and publications in peer-reviewed academic journals. If the degree was awarded outside the European Union, a NARIC certificate of equivalence is required; foreign diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English must include a translation.
The appointment begins on 1 October 2026 at the earliest and is offered for 2 years initially, with the possibility of a second appointment of up to 3 years after favourable evaluation. Salary is determined according to scale AAP5. Ghent University also notes various employment benefits, including training opportunities, paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, and ecocheques.
Applications must be submitted online before 2026-07-28 23:59 Brussels time. Candidates must upload a combined CV and publication overview, a cover letter, a diploma transcript if available, and equivalence documentation where applicable. For questions about the vacancy, contact Prof. Koen Verboven at [email protected]. For application-process questions, contact [email protected].
