About this position

A post-doctoral contract is available in structural engineering with the ConStruct research group at the University of the Balearic Islands (Universitat de les Illes Balears, UIB) in Palma, Spain.

The position is part of project PID2024-156537NB-C21, ASCEND: Evaluation and Fe-SMA Strengthening of Concrete Infrastructure with Corroded Flexural and Shear Reinforcement in Light of Climate Challenges. The successful candidate will work on the experimental and numerical assessment of eight full-scale slab-type dock elements removed from a marina after decades of service in a highly aggressive marine environment.

Core research tasks include designing the experimental campaign, planning failure trials for flexural and shear behavior, developing the monitoring strategy using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and other instrumentation, and building advanced finite element models in ATENA. The role also involves laboratory work such as sample preparation, testing, data collection, logistics for transporting elements, and coordination of final transfer to recycling facilities.

Additional research activities include material characterisation of reinforced concrete and steel, detailed assessment of corroded reinforcement after testing, and analysis of flexural ductility loss and shear strength degradation due to corrosion. The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute to related work in the project, including accelerated corrosion processes in newly constructed RC beams and the development and assessment of innovative strengthening solutions.

The appointment is hosted by the University of the Balearic Islands and is supervised by Dr. Antoni Cladera Bohigas. The position offers a gross monthly salary of 2,400.00 € plus National Social Security / public health insurance, with possible compensation increases based on recognised professional experience.

This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral position, with a planned start date of 5 October 2026 and an application deadline of 30 July 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Madrid). Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field, and should have proven experience in reinforced concrete testing and related areas such as durability, corrosion, structural assessment, or strengthening. Strong English skills are preferred for publishing and conference presentations.

Applications should be submitted via the university’s recruitment portal. Candidates are advised to consult the official UIB vacancy pages for the latest updates, forms, and full selection details.
