About this position

George Washington University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are recruiting a Post-Doctoral Fellow for Indoor Air Quality Emission Measurement in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

This opportunity sits at the intersection of Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Earth Science, and Computer Science. The project focuses on what happens after wildfire smoke impacts homes and buildings: toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be absorbed into building materials and furnishings and later re-emit as secondary hazards.

The successful candidate will work with field-scale wildfire smoke exposure events, selecting and placing test furnishings and structural materials during active events, then transferring samples to laboratory environmental chambers for controlled emission testing. A major part of the role involves operating high-resolution Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) systems to capture real-time emission rates and chemical kinetics.

In addition to experimental work, the fellow will develop custom data analysis tools to process large, continuous mass spectrometry datasets into usable kinetic profiles. The post is especially suitable for an analytical chemist or environmental engineer with hands-on experience in emission testing, PTR-MS instrumentation, and chamber-based measurements.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Atmospheric Science, or a related field; at least 1.5 years of emission testing experience; demonstrated PTR-MS and environmental chamber expertise; and strong scripting/data-processing skills.

Location: NIST Campus, Gaithersburg, MD, United States.

Application: Apply through the linked posting. No deadline was stated in the post.
