George Washington University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow for Nanocalorimetry Sensor Design and Fabrication in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

This opportunity sits at the intersection of materials science, physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, and MEMS sensor design. The project focuses on fabricating chip-scale sensors for measuring thermodynamic properties in ultra-thin films, with applications in thin-film materials characterization and in-situ monitoring of high-energy semiconductor plasmas.

The role offers end-to-end ownership of sensor development, including CAD modeling, multiphysics simulation using FEA/Abaqus, cleanroom photolithography, etching, thin-film deposition, and characterization with tools such as Laser Doppler Vibrometry, optical profilometry, and SEM.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Strong hands-on cleanroom experience and a solid background in thermal analysis and calorimetry are emphasized. Solidworks experience is preferred.
