Post-doctoral position in the professorship of history and philosophy of mathematical sciences ETH Zürich in Switzerland

The professorship for history and philosophy of mathematical sciences at ETH Zürich, led by Professor Roy Wagner, invites applications for a postdoctoral position. This research group is dedicated to exploring all aspects of mathematical knowledge from the perspective of the humanities, employing diverse methodological approaches to study both historical and contemporary mathematical cultures.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research on the development, practice, or social and cultural roles of mathematics, including mathematical aspects of other sciences. Research may be approached from the viewpoints of history, philosophy, or neighboring humanities disciplines such as science and technology studies (STS), cultural studies, or social anthropology. Projects on non-European mathematics, commercial or practical mathematics, cross-cultural mathematical exchange, and philosophical projects that consider mathematics as a practice are especially encouraged. Strict analytic philosophy projects are discouraged, but integration of analytic methodologies is welcome.

The position is full-time (41 hours per week) by default, with flexibility for part-time work, home office, or reduced hours for care-work, health, or wellbeing. The appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for their own research, participate in academic and social activities of the professorship, and teach one course per semester in the MAGPW or SiP programs.
