About this position

Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Cancer Genomics at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

This postdoctoral opportunity sits within a multidisciplinary clinical study (GP-TEST-Pro) focused on cancer genomics, prostate cancer, and polygenic risk scores. The successful candidate will analyse genomic data, perform genotype and imputed-data quality control, manage secure data storage, and calculate/validate a 451-SNV prostate cancer PRS. The work involves genomic data harmonisation, ancestry and population-structure assessment, and use of tools such as PLINK/PLINK2 and imputation outputs.

The role is embedded in a collaborative environment involving academics from the University of Manchester, Queen Mary University London, University College London, and the Institute for Cancer Research. The post is especially relevant to researchers with interests in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, cancer risk prediction, and early detection research.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have or be about to obtain a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant quantitative or genomics-related discipline, plus experience with genomic datasets, quality control, and PRS methods. Desirable experience includes prostate cancer genetics, diagnostic accuracy studies, calibration/discrimination, multivariable risk modelling, and integrating genomic with clinical or biomarker data.

Funding and conditions: this is a paid postdoctoral research position with standard employment benefits, including pension contribution, annual leave, and flexible/hybrid working information. The post is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship; applicants must already have the right to work in the UK.

Deadline: 22 October 2026.

How to apply: read the further particulars/person specification and submit an application via the University of Manchester job portal. For enquiries, contact Dr Samuel Merriel at [email protected].

What's required

Have or be about to obtain a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, cancer genomics, epidemiology, data science, or another related quantitative field. Applicants should have experience in cancer genomic medicine research, hands-on analysis of genetic or genomic datasets, cleaning and quality-controlling genotype or imputed genomic data, and calculating, validating, or applying polygenic risk scores with ancestry or population-structure adjustment. A strong understanding of SNVs, alleles, imputation, linkage disequilibrium, ancestry, population structure, and principal components is required. Desirable experience includes prostate cancer genetics, cancer risk prediction, diagnostic accuracy studies, calibration/discrimination, multivariable risk modelling, integrating genomic with clinical/epidemiological/biomarker/imaging data, working with PPI groups and co-investigators, and cancer screening or early detection research.

How to apply

Review the further particulars and person specification, then apply through the University of Manchester job portal. For role-specific questions, contact Dr Samuel Merriel by email. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK because the role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.
