The Department of Molecular Genetics is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a 48-month, full-time position within the National Science Centre OPUS 30 project, “How deleterious are miRNA gene variants? A global analysis of their functional consequences” (No. 2025/59/B/NZ2/03193). The project is led by Dr Paulina Gałka-Marciniak and focuses on understanding how sequence variants in microRNA (miRNA) genes contribute to regulatory dysfunction, human disease, and cancer.

The research combines experimental and computational approaches. High-throughput CRISPR-based genome editing and single-cell sequencing will be used to generate and measure the consequences of variants in miRNA genes. The postdoctoral researcher will primarily handle computational work: processing sequencing data, developing and evaluating statistical and machine-learning models, integrating experimental and computational findings, and contributing to the final variant-prioritization tool. The role also includes preparing analysis pipelines, documenting workflows, and supporting the planning and optimization of laboratory experiments to ensure data quality for downstream analysis.

The institute is one of the leading scientific centres in Poland in chemistry, molecular biology, and biomedicine. Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent in molecular biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, biochemistry, medicine, or a related field; a solid publication record including first-author papers; experience in cancer molecular genetics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or related areas of human genetics/molecular biology; command-line bioinformatics familiarity; very good English; and strong motivation for independent, problem-solving research. Experience with large datasets, Python/R, machine learning, and NGS data is advantageous.

Funding and conditions: The position is funded by the National Science Centre project, with a salary of up to PLN 14,450 gross per month (PLN 17,500 total employment costs), plus social benefits. The appointment begins in November 2026.

Experience in cancer molecular genetics and/or bioinformatics and/or biostatistics, or alternatively in other areas of human genetics and molecular biology, is expected. Experience with large biological datasets, machine-learning methods, Python/R programming, and NGS data analysis is an advantage. Applicants should be familiar with command-line bioinformatics tools, have very good English for communication and manuscript preparation, be strongly motivated, committed, able to work independently, and solve problems autonomously. According to NCN rules, the PhD must have been obtained no earlier than 12 years before the year of employment, with possible extensions for documented sickness/rehabilitation and childcare-related breaks; additional mobility requirements apply for degrees obtained at ICHB PAS.
