About this position

The successful candidate will work with bio-chemistry team members on peptide/protein inputs, collaborate with device engineers to build the required microfluidic environments, and support synthetic chemistry optimisation, computational feedback on sequence design, and systematic workflow tracking for experimental development.

Applicants should normally hold a PhD in an appropriate discipline, be close to PhD completion, or have substantial relevant experience with a lower degree. Strong knowledge of molecular self-assembly and/or biomineralisation is expected. Desirable experience includes microfluidics, experimental physical chemistry, soft matter characterisation using scattering and microscopy, sol-gel chemistry, peptide and protein chemistry, solid phase peptide synthesis, device engineering, and software control.

The role is full time (35 hours/week) and fixed term until 29 February 2028, with a possible extension to 29 September 2028. Salary is £37,694 to £41,064. Initial interviews are scheduled for October 2026 (date to be confirmed).

What's required

Normally educated to PhD level in an appropriate discipline, or close to PhD completion, or with significant relevant work experience plus a relevant lower degree. Applicants should have sufficient depth of knowledge in molecular self-assembly and/or biomineralisation. Highly desirable experience includes microfluidics, experimental physical chemistry, soft matter characterisation using scattering and microscopy techniques, sol-gel chemistry, peptide and protein chemistry and characterisation, solid phase peptide synthesis, device engineering, and software control, or the ability to rapidly acquire these skills. Strong planning, organisation, independent research, dissemination, interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills are required. Desirable but not essential: proposal writing, professional body membership, student supervision/teaching, and knowledge exchange experience.
