About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position in Sovereignty and Aesthetics Politics within the Department of Conflict and Development Studies, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. The position is part of the ERC-funded SovereignPerformance project, coordinated by Professor Bart Klem, and based in the Conflict Research Group (CRG), a multidisciplinary unit focused on micro-level dynamics of civil conflict and political violence. The successful candidate will join a team of five post-docs and contribute to the project's second work package, which investigates the aesthetic dimensions of political repertoires in three independence movements: the Catalan independence movement, the autonomous region of Rojava (Kurdistan), and the Sri Lankan Tamil nationalist movement.

Key responsibilities include dedicating at least 70% of the assignment to academic research, gathering and analyzing data through fieldwork and online research, collaborating with colleagues, publishing academic work, developing public outreach, presenting at workshops and conferences, organizing project events, and supporting departmental activities. The research environment is collegial and diverse, structured around clusters such as Interventions, Contested Resources, Armed Politics, and Conflict and Space.

Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate in a relevant discipline (Communication, Media and Art studies, Anthropology, Political Science, International Relations, Geography, Conflict Studies, Development Studies, or similar), obtained within the last 6 years. Required qualifications include demonstrable experience in academic research on political aesthetics, publishing in academic journals or books, knowledge or experience with societies facing separatist politics, an excellent publishing record, and strong English language skills. Additional desirable skills include experience with Catalan, Kurdish, or Sri Lankan Tamil society, relevant linguistic abilities, fieldwork experience, familiarity with de facto states, separatist conflict, performative politics, graphic design, art interventions, art-based research methods, and research dissemination via social media or non-academic channels.

The position offers a full-time contract of indefinite duration (maximum term 28 months), starting between October 2026 and February 2027. Remuneration follows salary scale PD1-PD4, with additional staff benefits such as training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Ghent University promotes equal opportunities and diversity.

To apply, submit your application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 14 August 2026. Required documents include a CV, cover letter with an annex table of competencies, PhD diploma transcript (with translation if necessary), transcript of grades, and up to two peer-reviewed academic publications. Applications not submitted online or after the deadline will not be considered. For academic queries, contact Prof. Bart Klem at [email protected]. For application process questions, email [email protected].
