About this position

Post-doctoral researchers in demography and education (EduTrack) at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany.

The EduTrack project (Tracking Education Pathways and Social Policies) is a 6-year interdisciplinary collaboration involving the MPIDR, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, the Max Planck Institute for Political and Social Science, and Population Europe. The project studies how education and knowledge transfer across life courses contribute to individual and societal well-being and resilience, with a particular focus on the bidirectional relationships between sociodemographic circumstances and educational trajectories.

This is a postdoctoral opening for several full-time researchers. The project funds four dedicated postdocs, and the position is open to applicants from anywhere in the world, though successful candidates are expected to relocate to Rostock or nearby for the duration of the contract. The contract can run for up to 4 years and includes salary according to the German public sector scale (TVöD Bund; EG14/1-3), with gross annual pay starting around 67,500 EUR for newly completed PhDs and rising to about 77,600 EUR for more senior scientists. Relocation support is available.

Research topics of interest include the intersection of education and political polarization, links between education and demographic outcomes such as migration, health and mortality, fertility and family formation, high-skilled migration and skill imbalances, immigrant integration and intergenerational inequality, and human capital formation/productivity/socio-economic sustainability. The geographic scope is not tied to any specific region.

Applicants should have completed a doctoral degree or expect to finish in early 2027. Strong quantitative skills are required, together with experience in R, Stata, Python, or similar programming languages. Collaboration across disciplines is essential, and open science practices are welcomed.

To apply, submit the online application survey and upload a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, research statement, two academic referees, and one writing sample or publication. Full consideration deadline: 15 August 2026. Interviews are planned for early September 2026, and the start date is flexible but no earlier than the beginning of 2027.

Contact for inquiries: Alyson van Raalte ([email protected]).
