About this position
University of Texas at Arlington | EPI (Emerging Photonics Integration) Lab
The EPI Lab is advertising two opportunities in semiconductor photonics: a postdoctoral researcher and PhD students (Spring 2027 intake). The research focus is on semiconductor lasers, optical amplifiers, and broader photonic device integration, including design, fabrication, characterization, and testing.
Postdoc opening: The lab seeks a researcher with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Optics and Photonics, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on cleanroom experience is required, especially in fabrication and characterization of semiconductor lasers and/or SOAs, along with design and simulation experience. Preferred experience includes III-V compound semiconductor epitaxy/growth, photonic device validation, and silicon photonics or heterogeneous integration platforms.
PhD opening (Spring 2027): The lab is looking for 1–2 highly motivated PhD students to work on semiconductor photonic devices and integrations. Applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. in EE, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, with a strong background in photonic devices such as lasers, amplifiers, modulators, and photodetectors. Cleanroom micro/nano-fabrication or photonic design experience is expected, and preferred strengths include epitaxial design, simulation tools such as Lumerical/COMSOL/PhotonDesign, and device layout/fabrication/testing.
Funding: The postdoc comes with a competitive salary and benefits, negotiable based on experience. No explicit funding package is stated for the PhD position in the post.
How to apply: Email Dr. Bei Shi at [email protected]. For the postdoc, send a CV, official transcript, 2–3 representative publications, and a brief research statement or slides deck. For the PhD opening, use the exact subject line [PhD application for Spring 2027] and include a CV, transcripts, representative publications or presentations, and a short paragraph describing your photonics experience.
