About this position

Nantes Université is offering a 18-month postdoctoral position within ISOMer, as part of the university’s “Ouverture” project and the Open Innovation Collective on Sustainable Water Management.

The project focuses on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), with the goal of identifying and quantifying short- and long-chain compounds in environmental matrices such as air, water, soil, and sediment, as well as in food-related matrices including drinking water and marine biota. The work is designed to improve understanding of PFAS sources, exposure pathways, fate, and bioaccumulation in the Pays de la Loire region, with fieldwork spanning both an urban university campus (Tertre) and a municipality (Pornic).

The research combines sampling strategy development, environmental monitoring, and advanced analytical chemistry. The postdoctoral researcher will implement conventional targeted analysis of around twenty PFAS compounds listed in the Water Framework Directive, alongside non-targeted screening approaches using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. The project also includes use of complementary methods such as total oxidisable precursor (TOP) determination, with all methods validated across the relevant matrices.

The project is embedded in a broader interdisciplinary regional initiative and is intended to support knowledge exchange with private and industrial partners, as well as institutional stakeholders, to accelerate innovation in emissions control and fate management. The appointment is based in Nantes, France, within the ISOMer research environment.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in analytical chemistry or environmental science and technology, strong expertise in analytical method development, extraction, internal-standard quantification, and method validation, with advantageous experience in environmental sampling and suspect/non-targeted screening. Good French and English are required.

The post requires knowledge and expertise in analytical development, a thorough understanding of extraction principles, quantification of organic compounds using internal standards, and method validation. Experience in environmental sampling and in targeted (suspect screening, SS) and non-targeted screening (NTS) analysis would be an advantage. Good French and good English are required. The post seeks researchers with 1-4 years of research experience.
