About this position

Postdoc opportunity at the University of Amsterdam in automated spectroscopy, photochemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, and laboratory automation.

This postdoctoral project focuses on building a self-driving laboratory platform for photoactive molecules and thin films. The work combines automated spectroscopy workflows, AI-driven process optimization, flow technology, photophysics, and quantitative measurements to accelerate discovery in (photo)chemistry. A major theme is the development of reliable diffusion-ordered optical spectroscopy for rapid determination of optical spectra, quenching, and quantum yields. Another key component is a flow-based ATR-UV–Vis spectroscopy platform to monitor the formation, orientation, and evolution of porous or photoactive thin films in real time, with a focus on organic cages.

The position is based at the Faculty of Science, University of Amsterdam, within the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS). The broader research environment includes the Šolomek group, Baumgartner group, and Noël group, with strong interdisciplinary links across spectroscopy, automation, synthesis, and materials research.

Applicants should have a PhD in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field. The role is highly hands-on and requires experience with building experimental setups, flow synthesis, spectroscopy, optics, fluidics, detectors, light sources, and reproducible handling of molecular and photosensitive samples. Programming experience with Python, LabVIEW, or Matlab for instrument control and data processing is required. Strong documentation skills, safe laboratory practice, clear communication, and enthusiasm for collaborative science are emphasized.

The contract is for 1 year at 38 hours per week. Salary ranges from €3,706 to €5,760 gross per month, excluding holiday allowance and year-end bonus. Additional benefits include pension, vacation hours, training opportunities, and possible access to the Dutch 30% ruling for eligible non-Dutch applicants.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, but the closing date is 2026-10-15. To apply, submit a motivation letter and CV with months listed for education and work experience, a publication list, and contact details for at least one academic reference via the vacancy page.

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD degree in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field. Required experience includes building experimental setups, ideally with flow synthesis and experimental spectroscopy, handling molecular solutions and photosensitive samples reproducibly, and working with optics, fluidics, detectors, light sources, or related laboratory hardware. Experience with instrument automation and quantitative data analysis is expected, with Python, LabVIEW, or Matlab required for instrument control/data processing. Candidates should document experiments carefully, work safely with chemical samples and solvents, communicate clearly across disciplines, and show strong initiative and passion for science. Collaboration with PhD students and postdocs is expected.

How to apply

Apply via the red button on the vacancy page by 2026-10-15. Submit a motivation letter and CV, including months for education and work experience, a publication list, and contact details for at least one academic reference.
