About this position

Postdoc in Bioresource Recovery at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), Hautscharage, Luxembourg.

This fixed-term, full-time postdoctoral position (9 months) is part of the SUPHA project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) through the TREK research program. The project aims to develop and optimise a membrane-based process for recovering humic substances directly from anaerobic digestate, with the postdoctoral researcher driving scale-up from bench to pilot scale (TRL 4–5).

The research focuses on three connected activities: process optimisation using AI-assisted experimental design to identify optimal operating conditions and improve yield while reducing costs; product development and quality benchmarking to compare produced fractions with commercial standards and define market-ready specifications with industrial stakeholders; and scale-up preparation through bottleneck analysis and a techno-economic assessment to establish a pathway for industrial implementation.

The ideal candidate holds a PhD in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, process engineering, or a closely related discipline. The position particularly suits researchers with hands-on experience in wastewater and/or biomass biotechnologies, membrane filtration (ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis), analytical characterisation of organic matter (FTIR, UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy), process scale-up, statistical analysis, and Python and/or AI optimisation tools. Excellent English communication skills are required.

LIST is a Research and Technology Organization active in materials, environment, and IT, with strong RDI partnerships in Luxembourg and Europe. The institute offers innovative laboratories, a multicultural environment, career development opportunities, and an attractive employment package including a gross monthly salary of €6094–€6678 paid over 13 months, annual leave, and flexible working arrangements.

Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled. To apply, submit the required documents online via the HR system: a motivation letter, scientific CV, publication list, and two references.
