Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Black Archive Project at the University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg is inviting applications for a Postdoc in the Black Archive Project, commencing August/September 2026. This interdisciplinary research initiative focuses on recovering, preserving, and activating African and Black intellectual traditions as living resources for contemporary scholarship, with attention to how these traditions can reshape institutions, knowledge production, public life, and higher education.

The fellowship is valued at R300,000 per annum (tax-free) and is offered for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. The role is based in Johannesburg and requires regular on-campus engagement and active participation in the intellectual life of the project.

Applicants should have completed a PhD in Philosophy or a closely related discipline, or be awaiting graduation after fulfilling all examination requirements. Scholars working in intellectual history, political theory, systems design theory, education, or related fields are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should demonstrate intellectual independence, originality, an excellent research and publication record, strong academic writing and communication skills, the ability to manage multiple research outputs, and a collaborative approach in an interdisciplinary environment.

A key requirement is demonstrable competency in at least one South African Indigenous language, together with the ability to conduct archival and scholarly research using Indigenous-language sources. This is especially important because major primary sources in the Black Archive include publications such as Abantu/Batho, Umthetheleli wa Bantu, Isigidimi samaXhosa, Ilanga lase Natal, and Imvo Zabantsundu.
