About this position

PostDoc in Cell Culture at the National Institute of Research and Innovation, Riga, Latvia

This postdoctoral opportunity is offered within the Horizon 2020 BBCE project, the Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence, a collaborative biomaterials research network involving Riga Technical University, National Institute of Research and Innovation, Rīga Stradiņš University, the Rīga Stradiņš University Institute of Stomatology, AO Research Institute Davos, and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The successful candidate will join the preclinical biomaterials group at NIRI and contribute to interdisciplinary research on the biological evaluation of biomaterials and nanoparticles. The work may focus on biomaterials for the repair and regeneration of bone defects, or on biomaterials and nanoparticles developed as diagnostic tools or therapeutics for cancer, depending on the candidate’s expertise and project fit.

Key responsibilities include planning and conducting cell-based studies, establishing and optimising experimental models, analysing microscopy and biological data, and contributing to publications and project reporting. The role is especially suitable for researchers with strong hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, including primary cell isolation and culture, and experience with organoids, spheroids, co-cultures or other three-dimensional cell models. Confocal microscopy is also expected.

Desired additional experience includes assay development, quantitative image analysis, biomaterial-cell interactions, nanoparticle uptake and intracellular trafficking, cancer biology, stem or progenitor cells, osteogenic differentiation, and molecular biology methods. The position may include specialised training and research visits to collaborating institutions, subject to project arrangements.

Funding includes a basic salary of EUR 52,000 per year before tax, health insurance, and dedicated support for training and short-term mobility subject to project arrangements.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field such as life sciences, medicine, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, biotechnology, bioengineering, or a closely related discipline. Funding details
