About this position
Postdoctoral Fellow position at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, the Netherlands, focused on climate-smart urban tree planting, soil biodiversity, and green-blue infrastructure.
The project sits within two nationally funded Dutch research programmes: Thirsty Cities and Fertile Soils. The successful candidate will help develop guidance, frameworks, and an open-source decision tool for climate- and soil-smart urban tree planting, integrating species distribution models, soil microbiome data, and water management outputs. The role also includes building a toolbox to quantify the climate-adaptive benefits of urban green-blue infrastructure and supporting knowledge transfer among ecologists, urban green specialists, municipalities, and water authorities.
You will join the BUGS (Biodiversity Under Global Stress) research group and work closely with Dr. Leon Marshall, while also collaborating with Prof. Vincent Merckx in the Understanding Evolution group. The environment is collaborative, international, and strongly connected to biodiversity research and practical ecological applications.
Applicants should have a PhD in ecology, biology, data science, statistics, environmental science, computer science, or a related field. Strong quantitative/computational skills are important, especially predictive modelling, machine learning, or statistical analysis of ecological/environmental datasets. Experience or interest in stakeholder engagement and co-design is valued. Excellent English is required, and Dutch is required due to the national orientation of the programmes.
