About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is offering a two-year postdoctoral position in core monitoring/reactor physics within the Reactor Physics, Modelling and Safety group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The project focuses on neutron noise diagnostics for nuclear reactors, combining physics-based modeling with artificial intelligence to detect anomalies in reactor cores. The research aims to develop and validate computational methods for water-cooled Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with an emphasis on practical industrial applicability and safety-critical deployment.

The group works on advanced methods for reactor modelling, simulation, monitoring, thermal-hydraulics, diagnostics, and nuclear safeguards, and collaborates with international partners and industry. This postdoc is carried out in the context of the ANItA competence centre (Academic Industrial Nuclear Technology Initiative), a Swedish academia-industry collaboration.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in reactor physics or an equivalent foreign degree by the time the employment decision is made. Strong English communication skills, experience in nuclear reactor simulation software, and reactor dynamics are required, along with social and collaboration skills. Prior teaching experience and strong potential in research and education are expected. Experience with deterministic nuclear simulation software, developing simulation codes, and machine learning will strengthen an application.

The successful candidate will develop computationally efficient anomaly-detection approaches from neutron detector signals, improve robustness across reactor operating conditions using high-fidelity simulations, and advance transparency and interpretability of machine learning models for safety-critical nuclear applications. The role also includes collaboration with academic and industrial partners, publication of research results, conference presentations, and some supervision of master’s and/or doctoral students. Teaching at undergraduate or master’s level may also be possible.

The appointment is a full-time temporary position for two years with a possible one-year extension. The role requires physical presence throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date if applicable.
