About this position

DTU/BRIGHT is advertising a Postdoc in Diet–Microbiome Interactions and Food Metagenome Mining in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark. The position sits in BRIGHT Mission 2: Microbial Foods and is supervised by Professor Morten Sommer with co-supervision by Associate Professor Alberto Santos.

The project is aimed at computational microbiome science with a strong translational angle: developing and applying a framework that links inferred food intake to microbial species, strain-level variation, pathways, and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). The work goes beyond simple one-food/one-microbe associations and focuses on interpretable diet–microbiome patterns that can be validated experimentally and integrated into BRIGHT’s modelling and product-optimisation pipeline.

Research themes and keywords include diet-microbiome interactions, shotgun metagenomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, statistical analysis, network analysis, microbial foods, and food metagenome mining. The role involves building curated food-sequence reference databases, mining large public and collaborative metagenome cohorts, applying statistical/compositional/network/ML methods, designing validation experiments, and communicating results through publications and presentations.

Applicants should hold a PhD degree or equivalent. The preferred background is in microbiome science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Required experience includes large-scale shotgun metagenomic analysis with taxonomic and functional profiling, strong programming skills in Python and/or R, HPC or cloud experience, solid statistics, and machine learning. Experience with in vitro/ex vivo fermentation or synthetic community experiments is desirable, or a clear motivation to learn them.

The appointment is a full-time postdoc for 3 years and 5 months. Salary and terms follow the Danish collective agreement, with possible supplements according to DTU’s scientific staff salary structure. The post does not mention a stipend amount, but it is a salaried employment position.

Deadline: 4 November 2026 at 23:59 Danish time. Apply online and submit one PDF containing a cover letter, CV, academic diplomas (MSc/PhD in English), and a publication list. The post is hosted at DTU/BRIGHT in Denmark.
