About this position

Postdoc position in Efficient NLP for Information Extraction from News at Utrecht University

This 24-month postdoctoral opening is based at the Department of Information and Computing Sciences, Faculty of Science, Utrecht University, in collaboration with the National Police Lab AI and the Natural Language Processing Group. The project focuses on Natural Language Processing, Information Extraction, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning for extracting entities, timelines, and relations from multilingual and multimodal news sources.

The research goal is to build small, efficient models that can identify who did what, where, and when, especially for crime-related themes such as drug trafficking. The postdoc will design and evaluate methods for multimodal entity, timeline, and relation extraction; fine-tune and distil small-scale language models from larger models; explore synthetic data generation; and study robustness, generalisability, and model collapse. The work is applied and collaborative, with validation on real-world use cases together with the Netherlands Police.

Applicants should have a PhD in NLP or a closely related area, strong machine learning and deep learning skills, and experience with model development and/or fine-tuning. The role also asks for a practical mindset and strong English communication skills (C1). Dutch is helpful but not required. The position offers a full-time contract for 24 months, with a permanent employment contract, salary scale 10, holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.

The application deadline is 11 September 2026. Apply through the Utrecht University vacancy page and include a motivation letter, CV, and at least two references.
