About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in gears: manufacturing to performance within machine elements and production development. The project investigates how manufacturing methods and manufacturing variations influence gear performance, with a strong focus on the relationship between geometry, surface properties, efficiency, wear, and service life.

The research is interdisciplinary and connects mechanical design, materials engineering, lightweight design, and production development. The successful candidate will plan and carry out experimental studies using an FZG test rig, characterise gear geometry and surface properties, and analyse how these factors affect gear function. The project also explores alternative gear materials and manufacturing methods, including powder metallurgical gears, as well as new lubrication strategies such as grease lubrication in precision applications.

The position is affiliated with XPRES – Centre of Excellence in Production Research, a long-term national initiative bringing together KTH, MDU, RISE, and Swerim. This provides a dynamic environment with close collaboration across academia and industry, and a strong focus on production excellence, energy-efficient drivetrains, and innovative gear design.

Eligibility and preferred profile: applicants must hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree by the time the appointment decision is made. Preferred qualifications include a recent doctorate (within the last three years), experience with experimental testing such as surface fatigue and efficiency tests on an FZG or equivalent rig, experience in gear design, and ability to measure gear geometry and characterise gear surfaces. Strong oral and written communication skills in Swedish and English are expected, and awareness of diversity, equal opportunity, and gender equality is valued.

Employment details: the appointment is a temporary full-time postdoctoral position for up to two years based in Stockholm, Sweden at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The position was published on 2026-08-28 and the application deadline is 2026-09-24 23:59 (CET/CEST).

How to apply: submit your application in KTH’s recruitment system and include a CV, copies of diplomas and grades, translations into English or Swedish if needed, and a brief account of your research motivation, academic interests, and future goals (maximum two pages).
