About this position

Postdoctoral opportunity at the University of Maryland Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) focused on land modeling, data assimilation, leaf area index (LAI), phenology, and satellite remote sensing.

The project aims to incorporate an existing global LAI product into NOAA’s Unified Forecast System (UFS) land model and evaluate impacts on near-surface atmospheric temperature and humidity, as well as surface energy and hydrologic budgets. A phenology-informed LAI seasonality framework will be developed to better represent green-up, peak canopy, and senescence in UFS applications.

The postdoc will work closely with scientists at the National Weather Service Office of Modeling and Development and CISESS. Responsibilities include updating physical parameterizations, developing or refining data assimilation algorithms, initializing phenology models with satellite-based LAI, organizing surface-process datasets, and preparing peer-reviewed manuscripts and technical reports.

Required background: Ph.D. within three years of graduation in Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology, or a related environmental science field, with strong emphasis on applied mathematics, numerical methods, and modeling. Preferred experience includes land surface models, phenology models, satellite-based surface property algorithms (such as LAI and albedo), and scientific programming (Fortran preferred).

The appointment is initially for one year and may be renewed depending on performance and funding availability. To apply, send a CV and cover letter to [email protected] describing how your experience matches the requirements.
