About this position
TU Delft is advertising a Postdoc position in measuring and simulating low clouds, focused on stratocumulus, cloud microphysics, turbulence, and radiation. The project is part of TurPhyCloud, an EU-funded ERC Synergy Project that combines high-resolution in-situ measurements with advanced modeling to improve understanding of how low clouds respond in a warming climate.
The successful candidate will work with an international team using instruments mounted on drones and a helikite during field campaigns at Utö Atmospheric and Marine Research Station in the Baltic Sea area. The research will support development of a Microphysics Informed Large-Eddy-Simulation (MiLES) model, which will be tested and embedded in operational weather and climate models.
The role sits in the Geoscience & Remote Sensing department at Delft University of Technology, within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. The postdoc will collaborate closely with PhD researchers, postdocs, professors, and consortium partners in Germany, Sweden, and Finland.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD degree is required; suitable backgrounds include Climate Science, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science. Applicants should have strong CFD skills, programming ability in Python, Fortran, or C++, experience with visualization tools, and experience with in-situ and remote sensing measurements of atmospheric turbulence and cloud microphysics. Experience with RANS or LES models is highly desirable. Fluency in English is required, and the role includes teaching activities.
Funding and conditions: the appointment is for 3 years, externally funded, with a salary range of €3706–€5760 and standard Dutch university employment benefits.
Deadline: applications must be submitted online by 28 September 2026. Applicants should upload a motivation letter and CV, and may include a link to their PhD thesis. Shortlisted candidates will be asked for at least two referees.
