About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Utrecht University in the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Sustainable Development.

This 17-month postdoctoral position focuses on building a Mediterranean-wide Community of Practice on social innovation and nature-based solutions (NBS) within the Horizon Europe-funded CARDIMED project (Climate Adaptation and Resilience Demonstrated in the Mediterranean region). The postdoc will work on governance and social innovation dimensions of NBS, connecting existing communities, NGOs, and local entrepreneurs into a translocal “community of communities” across the Mediterranean.

Research themes: social innovation networks, community of practice, environmental governance, sustainability transitions, qualitative research, participatory methods, climate resilience, and nature-based solutions.

Main tasks: design and facilitate online, onsite, and hybrid workshops/dialogues; co-organise a conference in spring 2027 (probably in Spain); lead Deliverable 3.4 on the Mediterranean NBS Community of Practice; collaborate with partners across Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Turkey, and Cyprus; and contribute to dissemination and at least one peer-reviewed publication.

Eligibility highlights: PhD awarded or near completion in sustainability science, urban planning and governance, human geography, policy studies, sustainability transitions, environmental policy/planning, environmental governance and politics, resilience studies, or a related field. Applicants should have experience with social innovation networks or transdisciplinary research, workshop facilitation, qualitative analysis, ethical research practice, and lead-author publishing. Strong English is required; additional Mediterranean languages are an asset.

Funding: full-time salary scale 10 at Utrecht University, gross monthly salary €3,706–€5,760, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.

Application: submit a one-page motivation letter with one concrete idea for strengthening a translocal NBS community of practice, CV and publication list, two referees, and one relevant published paper via the university’s apply-now portal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the deadline is 6 September 2026.
