About this position
Postdoctoral position at Universitat de Barcelona in metacommunity modelling applied to aquatic biomonitoring in temporary rivers. The project, DRY-Guadalmed, is funded by the Spanish research agency and focuses on improving ecological status assessment during the dry phase of Mediterranean rivers, including disconnected pools and dry riverbeds.
The postdoc will work on implementing the metacommunity framework into bioassessment using existing empirical data from water agencies. The broader project also develops biological, physico-chemical, and hydro-geomorphological metrics for disconnected pools and dry riverbeds, with relevance to aquatic macroinvertebrates, diatoms, terrestrial invertebrates, and terrestrial plants.
Research keywords: freshwater ecology, biodiversity, metacommunity modelling, river biomonitoring, macroinvertebrates, diatoms, ecology, environmental science.
Eligibility: PhD in Biology or Environmental Sciences with an ecology profile. Applicants should have experience in freshwater ecology and biodiversity, especially temporary-river metacommunities, plus experience in metacommunity modelling. Knowledge of river biomonitoring and the Water Framework Directive is required. Good English and Spanish are expected.
Funding: Full-time temporary contract (37.5 hours/week) for 9 months with a salary of 29,700€.
Location: Barcelona, Spain.
Deadline: 19 October 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Madrid).
