About this position

Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is advertising a Postdoc position in the Institute of Resource Ecology, based in Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany. The role focuses on methods development for the micromechanical characterization and modeling of the mechanical behavior of ion-irradiated nuclear structural materials within Materials Acceleration Platforms (MAPs).

The project combines nanoindentation, microstructure-based modeling, numerical analysis, and digital screening approaches to study radiation-induced hardening, embrittlement, and related damage phenomena in innovative nuclear materials. The successful candidate will help develop and validate tools for extracting robust property values from depth-resolved nanoindentation data and integrating these methods into fast experimental and computational workflows.

This is a research-intensive, methods-driven postdoc in an interdisciplinary environment with PhD students, postdocs, senior scientists, and technical staff, plus international project partners. The institute explicitly welcomes independent methodological ideas, including microstructure-based modeling, digital screening, and new experimental analysis methods.

Eligibility highlights: completed PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Materials Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field; strong background in metallic materials and their mechanical characterization; experience with finite element simulation, crystal plasticity, analytical hardening models, or data-driven analysis; interest in radiation damage; solid data analysis/statistics; programming skills (preferably C/C++ or Python); excellent English, with German as a plus.

Funding and conditions: full-time employment with salary and social benefits under TVöD-Bund; possible classification up to EG 13 depending on qualifications; 30 days paid leave, pension scheme, flexible hours, and mobile working options.
