The Division of Dynamics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a project on modeling human-like balance and step recovery. The work sits at the intersection of robotics, biomechanics, mechanical engineering, and transport safety, and is carried out with the Robot Athletic Intelligence Lab (RAIL), which focuses on legged robotics and dynamics & control.

The project aims to transfer methods from humanoid robotics—such as reinforcement learning, whole-body model predictive control (MPC), and differentiable optimal control—to simulate human balance and step recovery in public transport scenarios. A key goal is to build a parameterized human model that spans different demographic groups, with potential applications in autonomous vehicle safety, transport infrastructure planning, rehabilitation aid design, and improved humanoid robot locomotion control.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a doctoral degree in robotics, biomechanics, or a closely related field such as mechanical/electrical engineering, computer science, or mathematics with a relevant specialization. Strong English communication skills, experience in legged robotics or humanoid control, multibody dynamics modeling and simulation, and a publication record in leading robotics/AI or biomechanics venues are required. Additional strengths include experience with simulation tools such as MuJoCo, Drake, Pinocchio, Isaac Sim, OpenSim, biomechanics, human motion analysis, transport safety, human factors, rehabilitation engineering, and motion capture.

Employment terms: the position is a temporary full-time postdoc for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The expected start date is 1 January 2027. The role requires physical presence throughout the employment period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
