About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is advertising a postdoctoral position in modelling and digital twin development at the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology and the Wallenberg Wood Science Center in Stockholm, Sweden.

The project is part of a Formas-funded collaboration with industrial partners Hitachi Energy and Nordic Seafarm. The research aims to develop knowledge and tools that reduce the energy used in the dewatering and drying of bio-based materials. The successful candidate will build a physics-based numerical model of mechanical dewatering and subsequent thermal drying, then advance it into a validated digital twin for the process.

The work will be carried out within a continuum porous-media framework, using Darcy flow coupled to heat transfer with phase change. The model will be implemented in existing codes and/or COMSOL, with possible use of AI tools. The postdoc will calibrate and validate the model against experimental data, demonstrate the digital twin using industrial or laboratory data, and work closely with an experimental postdoc and the industrial partners.

Required qualifications include a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree, documented expertise in numerical modelling and simulation of coupled physical phenomena, experience with finite element or finite volume methods, and scientific programming skills such as Python, MATLAB, C++ or Fortran. Very good English skills are required. KTH also looks for independent, initiative-driven candidates who can collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment.

Preferred experience includes a recent PhD, COMSOL Multiphysics or similar software, modelling of dewatering, drying or wet pressing of pulp, paper or fibre networks, and experience in calibration/validation, digital twins, or reduced-order models. Teaching ability and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity, especially gender equality, are also noted.

The appointment is full time and temporary for up to two years. Applications must be submitted through KTH's recruitment system and include a CV, degree documents, translations if needed, and a brief statement of research interests and motivation. The deadline is 2026-09-19 at 23:59 CET/CEST.

What's required

A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree is required and must be completed no later than the employment decision. Applicants must have documented scientific expertise in numerical modelling and simulation of coupled physical phenomena, demonstrated through publications, and experience with finite element or finite volume methods plus scientific programming such as Python, MATLAB, C++ or Fortran. Very good spoken and written English is required. Preferred qualifications include a PhD obtained within the last three years, experience with COMSOL Multiphysics or similar multiphysics software, experience modelling dewatering, drying or wet pressing of pulp, paper or fibre networks, experience calibrating and validating models against experimental data or working with digital twins and reduced-order models, teaching ability, and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues with a focus on gender equality. Personal qualities such as independence, initiative, and strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills are important.

How to apply
