About this position

Postdoc opportunity in wetland ecosystem biogeochemistry at the University of Copenhagen. The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management is inviting applications for a 3-year full-time postdoctoral position focused on the development and application of models to simulate the ecosystem biogeochemistry of wetlands at regional to global scales.

The project will assess the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic drivers on wetland greenhouse gas balances, including emissions of CO2, CH4, and N2O. The postdoc is part of the Global Wetland Center, a research center funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and run in collaboration with the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, DHI A/S, and GEUS.

Research themes include process-based modelling, hybrid modelling, machine learning, integration of Earth observation data, and potentially differentiable programming for upscaling greenhouse gas fluxes. The work aims to quantify wetland greenhouse gas budgets across tropical inland wetlands, northern high-latitude wetlands, and coastal wetlands under current and future climatic conditions, and to study the effects of wetland management such as draining and rewetting.

The successful candidate will work closely with hydrological modellers, Earth observation experts, and computer scientists, and will join a team of 10–15 early career scientists. The post includes research and teaching duties.

Eligibility: a PhD in geography, environmental sciences, ecology, computer sciences, or a related discipline; experience with process-based or hybrid modelling and/or machine learning; experience handling big data and/or Earth observation data; Python and PyTorch are desirable, and differentiable programming is an asset.
