About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Utrecht University in multi-risk adaptation pathways for river delta systems.

This 2-year postdoctoral project is based in the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The research focuses on river delta regions facing sea-level rise and extreme hydrological events, with an emphasis on designing robust adaptation pathways for complex multi-sectoral systems.

The project builds on the Dynamic Adaptive Pathways Planning for Multi-Risk (DAPP-MR) framework. The successful candidate will work with decision-makers and stakeholders in the Netherlands to characterize current and future risks in the Dutch delta, identify trade-offs among sectoral priorities such as drinking water, flood protection, and ecosystem preservation, and develop methods for pathway design and evaluation. The work includes stakeholder meetings, scientific conferences, and journal publications.

Research keywords: river delta systems, climate adaptation, hydrology, physical geography, civil engineering, environmental science, systems modelling, computer programming (Python), decision-making under uncertainty, multi-objective optimization, stakeholder engagement, participatory research.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a PhD in Civil Engineering, Earth Science, Environmental Science, (Socio-) Hydrology, Physical Geography, or a related field; a peer-reviewed publication record; experience with systems modelling and programming; strong English writing and communication skills; and an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience with DAPP, DMDU, multi-objective optimization, and river/coastal/delta modelling is helpful.

Funding and terms: the position is offered at 1.0 FTE for 24–36 months, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760 plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.

Deadline: 17 November 2026.

How to apply: use the Apply now button on the Utrecht University vacancy page and submit a CV plus motivation letter. Selected international candidates may be asked for degree certificates and grade lists.
