About this position

TU Delft is advertising a Postdoc in Nature-Inspired Architectured Concrete in the Materials & Environment section, Department of Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

The project explores a new direction in civil engineering and materials science: using 3D-printed concrete as a scaffold to guide the growth of a chitinous fungal network, with the goal of creating living composite materials that are structurally resilient and more sustainable than conventional reinforced concrete. The work sits at the intersection of architectured concrete, nature-inspired design, computational modelling, and mechanical testing.

The postdoc will use existing computational tools and research foundations to investigate promising concrete architectures, design and perform simple experiments to validate them, and combine modelling with experimental results to understand how architecture influences mechanical performance. The post is described as the first in the department focusing on hard/soft composites, and it offers collaboration with leading international researchers.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline; a strong publication record; experience with mechanical testing and/or numerical modelling (e.g. Abaqus) is an advantage; excellent English; and the ability to work independently. The post also notes that, because the project is short and focused, candidates already in the Netherlands are preferred.

Funding and conditions: temporary postdoctoral employment for 5.4 months, 38-40 hours per week, salary €3546-€5538 per month, with standard Dutch university employment benefits including pension, leave, training opportunities, and other allowances.

Application window: apply online by 4 October 2026 through the TU Delft application portal. Submit a CV and motivational letter, and address the application to Branko Šavija.
