Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting a postdoc for research on next generation thermal architectures for electrified transport within the Division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The position sits in a strong interdisciplinary environment focused on vehicle analysis, robotics, energy efficiency, safety, and system-level transport research.
The project addresses an important challenge in the electrification of heavy transport: how to design compact, efficient thermal management systems for batteries and hydrogen fuel cells under real operating conditions. The work aims to develop and evaluate innovative cooling concepts using a multiphysics framework, with attention to thermal management system modelling, aero-thermodynamic integration, drag penalties, heat exchanger sizing and placement, airflow requirements, and evaluation of concepts against critical mission profiles. The project is carried out in collaboration between the Road Vehicle Aerodynamics and Thermal Management Group and the Turbomachinery and Aeroacoustics Group at Chalmers.
The successful candidate will pursue research in modelling and optimisation for novel cooling concepts, using open-source models and advanced numerical methods. The role also includes limited supervision of master's students and some teaching at master's level. This is a temporary full-time appointment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and requires physical presence throughout the employment.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent foreign degree by the employment decision date. Strong English communication skills, a solid background in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and CFD, and strong numerical and analytical abilities are required. Experience in automotive or aerospace applications is highly desirable. Additional merit is given to candidates who earned their PhD within the last three years and who have experience with STAR-CCM+ and programming.
