About this position
Postdoc opportunity at Utrecht University in ocean acidification and the marine phosphorus cycle. The project, PHOSFLUX, is an NWO-funded collaboration between Utrecht University and NIOZ that investigates how ocean acidification may alter CaCO3 fluxes, phosphorus cycling, ocean fertility, and CO2 uptake.
The postdoctoral researcher will focus on biogeochemical modelling and develop a reactive-transport model for phosphorus dynamics in sinking and deposited marine snow. The work includes processes such as CaCO3 dissolution, organic matter decomposition, and adsorption/incorporation of PO4 into solid phases. The model will be tested against experimental and field data in collaboration with the project PhD student.
The position is based in the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University, Netherlands. The team includes Prof. Dr. Mariëtte Wolthers (Utrecht University) and Dr. Peter Kraal (NIOZ). The project combines field work in the North Atlantic Ocean, laboratory experiments, synchrotron-based analyses, and numerical modelling.
Applicants should have completed a PhD in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biology, or a related field by the start date. Desired experience includes biogeochemistry, marine research, numerical modelling of mineral-water interactions and/or organic matter degradation, and interest in synchrotron techniques. Strong English, communication, teamwork, and willingness to travel are important.
The appointment is for 36 months at 1.0 FTE, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760 plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The deadline is 31 October 2026, and the position can start as soon as possible, no later than 1 January 2027.
