About this position

Uppsala University is advertising a postdoctoral position in organic synthesis of battery electrolyte solvents at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden.

The project is based in the Structural Chemistry section and the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, where researchers develop and evaluate materials for energy storage. The postdoc will design and synthesise bio-based solvent molecules for sustainable electrolytes in lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, with a focus on renewable carbon feedstocks, improved safety, reduced climate impact, and lower dependence on fossil-based raw materials.

Main tasks include organic synthesis, product characterisation using techniques such as NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis, and GC-MS, and measurement of physicochemical properties relevant to electrolyte solvents, such as boiling point and viscosity. The project is collaborative and includes work with colleagues testing electrochemical performance, as well as interaction with industry partners and international collaborators.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field is required by the employment decision date. Applicants should have strong experience in synthesising and characterising organic solvents for battery electrolytes, excellent English, and a record of collaborative research, publications, and conference presentations. Experience with sustainable synthesis, battery research, lab setup, data curation, electronic lab notebooks, and Python is advantageous.

Employment details: temporary position for 2 years, with possible extension up to 1 year; full-time; teaching may account for up to 20% of working hours. The starting date is 2026-10-26 or as agreed. Placement is Uppsala.

Application deadline: 2026-10-16 21:59 UTC.
