About this position

Utrecht University is recruiting a Postdoc in Palaeoclimate Modelling within the Horizon Europe Past to Future (P2F) project, a multidisciplinary consortium focused on how past climate states can improve understanding of future climate sensitivity, tipping points, and environmental limits.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU), specifically within the Oceans and Climate group, on long-timescale climate simulations such as glacial-interglacial cycles and the Pliocene. The project uses fast Earth System Models and the CESM model to study how climate sensitivity varies over time, how feedbacks influence abrupt transitions, and how palaeodata can inform improved future climate projections.

This opportunity is well suited to candidates with a PhD in physics, applied mathematics, meteorology, geosciences, or a related field, plus strong scientific programming and numerical/statistical analysis skills. Experience with Earth System Modelling, climate model output analysis, proxy data, and palaeoclimate model-data comparison is highly relevant. Basic knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamics and fluency in English are also expected.

The position is for 2 years and offers a full-time salary in scale 10 under the Dutch universities collective agreement, with gross monthly pay between €3,546 and €5,538, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.

Deadline: 15 July 2026. Applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, at least two references, and proof of PhD completion or expected defence date through the university application portal.
