Postdoc in Palaeoclimate Modelling at Utrecht University

Utrecht University is advertising a postdoc position in palaeoclimate modelling within the Horizon Europe project PAST TO FUTURE: TOWARDS FULLY PALEO-INFORMED FUTURE CLIMATE PROJECTIONS (P2F) . The post is based in the Faculty of Science, Department of Physics , and the successful candidate will work in the Oceans and Climate group at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU) . The research focuses on using fast Earth System Models and the more complex CESM Earth System Model to study long climate simulations such as glacial-interglacial cycles and the Pliocene. The aim is to understand how climate sensitivity changes over time, how feedback strengths vary, and whether extreme climate sensitivity is linked to a higher probability of tipping points . The role also includes using paleodata-informed CESM simulations to support future climate projections and improve Earth system model evaluation. Applicants should hold a PhD in physics, applied mathematics, meteorology, geosciences, or a related field. Strong scientific programming and numerical/statistical analysis skills are required, along with experience in Earth System Modeling and climate model output analysis. Experience with EMICs, CESM or another CMIP model, proxy data, and palaeoclimate model-data comparison is desirable. Basic knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamics and fluent English are also expected. The position is 2 years full-time, with a gross monthly salary of €3,546 to €5,538 (scale 10 under CAO NU), plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The application deadline is 15 July 2026 , and interviews are planned for August , with a preferred start date of 1 October . To apply, use the university’s application button and submit a motivation letter, CV, at least two references with contact details, and proof of PhD completion or expected defence date.

Postdoc in Palaeoclimate Modelling at Utrecht University

Utrecht University is recruiting a Postdoc in Palaeoclimate Modelling within the Horizon Europe Past to Future (P2F) project, a multidisciplinary consortium focused on how past climate states can improve understanding of future climate sensitivity, tipping points, and environmental limits. The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU) , specifically within the Oceans and Climate group, on long-timescale climate simulations such as glacial-interglacial cycles and the Pliocene. The project uses fast Earth System Models and the CESM model to study how climate sensitivity varies over time, how feedbacks influence abrupt transitions, and how palaeodata can inform improved future climate projections. This opportunity is well suited to candidates with a PhD in physics, applied mathematics, meteorology, geosciences, or a related field, plus strong scientific programming and numerical/statistical analysis skills. Experience with Earth System Modelling, climate model output analysis, proxy data, and palaeoclimate model-data comparison is highly relevant. Basic knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamics and fluency in English are also expected. The position is for 2 years and offers a full-time salary in scale 10 under the Dutch universities collective agreement, with gross monthly pay between €3,546 and €5,538 , plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. Deadline: 15 July 2026. Applicants should submit a motivation letter, CV, at least two references, and proof of PhD completion or expected defence date through the university application portal.
