About this position
Freie Universität Berlin is advertising a postdoctoral research assistant position within the Cluster of Excellence SCRIPTS (Contestations of the Liberal Script) at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science, Department of Political and Social Sciences.
The position is designed for outstanding early-career researchers with a completed PhD in a field relevant to the project, especially political science, social sciences, and/or area studies. Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degree within the last three years and must have at least one year of research experience outside Europe, either during or after the PhD. Strong English skills (minimum C1) and knowledge of at least one additional language (minimum B2) are required, along with a research project clearly aligned with the SCRIPTS research agenda or one of its ongoing projects.
The postdoc will conduct independent research on democratic resilience, liberal democracy, and political contestation, and will collaborate with a SCRIPTS Principal Investigator on a joint scholarly output such as a workshop, conference panel, or co-authored paper. The role also includes publication in peer-reviewed journals, academic event organization, and active participation in collaborations and colloquia.
This is a full-time position, limited until 31 December 2029, with salary according to pay group 13 TV-L FU. Additional funding is available for collaborative activities and project-related expenses, including workshops and research travel. The post includes a required multi-month research stay at a SCRIPTS partner institution outside Germany, with the location depending on whether the applicant’s PhD was obtained in the Global North or Global South.

Completed academic studies (e.g. a Master’s degree) and a PhD in a field relevant to the position, such as social sciences and/or area studies. Applicants should have excellent expertise in the SCRIPTS research topic, a strong research project aligned with the SCRIPTS research agenda or an ongoing SCRIPTS project, excellent English (minimum C1), good knowledge of at least one additional language (minimum B2), willingness to undertake a multi-month research stay abroad, and preferably at least one year of experience in an internationally and interdisciplinary research team after the PhD plus at least one year of research experience outside Europe during or after the PhD.
