About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Scientific Imaging Data Reduction and Compression at Lund University / MAX IV Laboratory, Sweden.

This postdoc sits in the Scientific Data Group within the Technical Division of MAX IV. The project focuses on scientific imaging, tomography, data reduction, lossy compression, scientific computing, image processing, and FAIR data management for large-scale X-ray imaging and tomography workflows. The work is carried out in collaboration with European photon science facilities through the LEAPS community and connects to MAX IV beamlines including DanMAX, ForMAX, and the developing TomoWISE beamline.

The successful candidate will evaluate and benchmark compression and reduction methods, develop software tools and validation workflows, define quality metrics and best practices, collaborate with beamline scientists and computing specialists, and contribute to workshops, training, documentation, and publications. The role is highly interdisciplinary and international, with strong emphasis on reproducible scientific outcomes and sustainable data handling for next-generation research infrastructures.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Scientific Computing, Image Processing, Data Science, or a closely related field; experience in scientific programming/software development; Python plus one high-performance language such as C++, Rust, or Julia; experience with large scientific datasets, imaging/tomography/compression, Linux, version control, and strong English communication skills. A PhD completed within the last three years is normally required.

Employment: full-time, fixed-term for two years. Location: Lund, Sweden. Deadline: 2026-10-18.
