About this position
IMT Atlantique is offering a full-time postdoctoral position in sociology, management, or ergonomics within its Interdisciplinary Department of Social Sciences (DI2S) on the Nantes campus in France.
The post is attached to the RESOH Research Chair (Research on Safety, Organizations and People), with affiliation to LEMNA (Laboratoire d’Économie et de Management Nantes Atlantique). The research agenda sits at the interface of sociology and management studies and focuses on high-risk organizations, work and work organization, and the socio-organizational, managerial, and institutional conditions that shape reliability, safety, and production.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with faculty and researchers, as well as industrial and institutional partners. Main tasks include literature review, research protocol design, documentary analysis of high-risk sectors such as nuclear and petrochemical industries, qualitative fieldwork in partner organizations, semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, focus groups, transcription and analysis of interview data, contribution to interim feedback sessions, and preparation of reports, conference presentations, and publications.
The project is especially relevant for candidates interested in organizational sociology, management studies, ergonomics, science and technology studies, and qualitative inquiry in industrial settings. It also offers an interdisciplinary research environment and opportunities to contribute to both academic dissemination and practitioner-oriented knowledge transfer.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD obtained less than three years before appointment in sociology, management sciences, or ergonomics; excellent French for fieldwork interviews; sufficient English for reading the scientific literature; and strong experience with qualitative methods. Knowledge of high-risk organizations, organizational reliability or resilience, sociotechnical approaches, and tools such as NVivo or Zotero is desirable.

Applicants must have a PhD obtained less than three years before the appointment date in sociology, management sciences, or ergonomics. Strong knowledge of work, organization, management tools, Science and Technology Studies (STS), or human resources is expected, along with strong qualitative research skills and prior case-study experience using semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and focus groups. Excellent French is required to conduct fieldwork interviews, plus sufficient English for reading scientific literature. Relevant research experience, openness to interdisciplinary collaboration, excellent writing, strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently in fieldwork, and ability to work in an interdisciplinary multi-site team are required. Experience with qualitative analysis tools such as NVivo and reference managers such as Zotero is desirable, as is knowledge of high-risk organizations, reliability or resilience, sociotechnical approaches, and industrial settings.
