About this position

This postdoctoral position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is part of the Swedish governmental battery initiative COMPEL and focuses on precision manufacturing for scalable production of solid-state batteries.

The project is hosted in the Department of Production Engineering in Stockholm and runs for up to two years. It sits at the interface of precision manufacturing, metrology, production engineering, and digital manufacturing, with direct application to lithium solid-state batteries. The research aims to understand how manufacturing precision, integrated metrology, and inline quality assurance can reduce process variability, minimize process-induced errors, and improve production robustness across the battery manufacturing chain.

The work will examine how sources of variation arise and propagate from equipment performance and component processing to cell assembly, and how they can be characterized, quantified, and controlled. A key goal is to build measurement-based methodologies linking manufacturing precision, process capability, and product quality. The project will use advanced metrology and non-destructive evaluation techniques such as optical and laser-based metrology, industrial X-ray computed tomography, and ultrasonic sensing to monitor process stability and identify defects at different stages of production.

Measurement data may be combined with process models and digital engineering tools to support tolerance engineering, process analysis, and continuous improvement. The expected outcome is new knowledge and methods for reducing manufacturing variability, improving process capability, and enabling reliable industrial scale-up of solid-state battery production.

Eligibility requires a doctoral degree, or an equivalent foreign degree, in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a closely related field, together with experience in manufacturing, precision engineering, or manufacturing metrology. English proficiency is required. Preferred qualifications include a recent PhD, experience in solid-state batteries and battery manufacturing, practical background in precision manufacturing and quality assurance, independence, teamwork, and strong collaboration skills.
