About this position

Postdoc position in spatial genomics of aquatic invertebrates at Eawag and the University of Zurich, in the Altermatt lab. The project focuses on the genomic diversity, connectivity, adaptive variation, and spatial ecology of multiple aquatic keystone species, especially EPT insects (mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies) and amphipods.

The successful candidate will establish draft genomes for selected species, generate population-level whole genome sequencing and/or ddRAD sequencing data for around 2,000 individuals across dozens of populations, and analyse genome-wide diversity, inbreeding, effective population size, and spatial genetic structure. The work also includes assessing how genetic diversity relates to river network topology, environmental variables, biogeographic drivers, and future climate and land-use change.

This is a highly collaborative and applied research project linked to the Swiss national biodiversity context, including FOEN/BAFU, WSL, University of Lausanne, ETH Zurich’s Genetic Diversity Centre, and Swiss biodiversity monitoring initiatives. The project aims to support future genetic diversity monitoring strategies for aquatic ecosystems.

The position is fully funded for 3 years and is expected to start in fall 2026. Applicants must hold a PhD in Molecular Ecology, Ecology, Biodiversity Sciences, or a closely related field, and should have strong laboratory and bioinformatics experience with WGS and/or ddRAD sequencing. Experience in spatial modelling or programming is an advantage. English fluency is required; German or French are desirable.

Apply by 2026-08-09 via the official application page. Submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, diplomas, and three references.
