About this position

Postdoctoral position at the University of Copenhagen in the NIVI Research Center, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

The project is part of the Strep A Vaccine Research Group led by A/Prof Stephan Brouwer and focuses on Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus) vaccine antigen discovery, characterization, and functional evaluation. The successful candidate will develop and validate biochemical, enzymatic, cellular, and immunological assays to study antigen function, virulence factors, and antibody-mediated neutralization/inhibition.

Research activities include recombinant protein expression and purification, protein characterization, enzyme kinetics, molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, opsonophagocytic killing (OPK) assays, and other functional immune assays. The group works in a collaborative, international environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities for molecular microbiology, protein biochemistry, assay development, SPR-based interaction analysis, microscopy, genomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, and bioinformatics.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or a closely related field; strong experience with functional assay development and recombinant protein work; excellent English; strong publication record; ability to work independently and collaboratively. Desirable experience includes bacterial pathogens, host-pathogen interaction research, antibody-functional assays, OPK assays, primary immune cells, and biophysical/structural protein analysis.

Funding and terms: fixed-term postdoctoral appointment for 24 months, full-time (37 hours/week). Salary, pension, and employment conditions follow the Danish academic agreement; employer pension contribution is 18.07%. Extension may be possible depending on project progress, funding, and mutual agreement.

Application deadline: 1 November 2026, 23:59 CET. Apply online and upload a motivation letter, CV, PhD and MSc certificates (or supervisor statement if the PhD is not completed), publication list, and up to three references.

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or a closely related field. Strong hands-on experience in developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting biochemical, enzymatic, or protein-based functional assays is required, along with expertise in recombinant protein expression, purification, and characterization. The post also requires knowledge of protein biochemistry, enzyme kinetics, protein-protein interactions, structure-function relationships, molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, and the ability to independently design experiments and solve technical problems. A strong publication record, collaborative mindset, and excellent written and spoken English are expected. Desirable experience includes bacterial pathogens, antibody-functional assays, OPK assays, primary immune cells or phagocyte-based models, biophysical methods such as SPR or SEC-MALS, and protein structural analysis.

How to apply

Apply online in English via the university application portal. Include a motivated letter, CV, certified/signed PhD and MSc certificates (or supervisor statement if PhD not completed), publication list, and up to three references with contact details. Submit before the deadline.
